There’s this new fast food restaurant in the town I live called White Castle. It isn’t much different than any other fast food restaurant – burgers and fries and such. The only thing that really makes them stand out is the fact that all of their sandwiches are square instead of round. Well, ever since the day that they opened, there has been a line of cars starting at the check out window, going around three sides of the building, out to the road and then out to the center turning lane of the main road. In fact, there have been so many cars that there is usually a White Castle employee standing out by the road directing traffic and police have started issuing tickets for cars blocking traffic. I was returning home one night at nearly 11:00 PM and there was still a line of cars all the way to the road.
Now, I’m sure that eating a square burger instead of a round one is quite enjoyable, but at least in my eyes, certainly not worth an hour or even 30 minutes wait; especially when I can go across the street to another fast food restaurant and be the only person in line and get an equally tasty meal.
I was reading the news recently and it was talking about some guy who had a preorder voucher for the final edition to the Harry Potter series. He accidentally dropped it in an icy river and of course jumped in to rescue it. He was unsuccessful in retrieving the $30 voucher but he did earn a call to EMS who had to rescue him from hypothermia.
People get excited about all sorts of things, but it reaches a new level when they are willing to give something or risk having to give something – passion. The line of people waiting for a square burger was willing to wait 30 minutes or more and the guy with the voucher was willing to risk his own safety. What is it that dictates what is worth becoming passionate about?
In John’s letter to Ephesus, God says “You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you; You have forsaken your fist love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first (Revelation 2:3,4).”
